演奏者以右手的拇指、食指和中指来拨动琴弦，控制节奏音高，奏出旋律；用左手在弦柱左侧顺应弦的张力来控制音色变化，装饰美化旋律，表现风格特色。有时因作品的需要，也以控制琴弦张力的方法改变音高。这样就形成了古筝演奏基本技法的右手技法和左手技法两大类。右手的常用技法有托、劈、挑、抹、剔、勾、摇、撮、刮等，左手的常用技法有按、滑、揉、颤等。
